Article: Signs your skincare routine is too complicated

Signs your skincare routine is too complicated

Signs your skincare routine is too complicated

One of the biggest myths in skincare is that better skin comes from doing more. More serums. More active ingredients. More treatments. More steps. More products.

And if your skin isn't behaving? The answer often seems to be adding something else. But I'm here to tell you that the 10-step skincare routine you've been seeing all over social media isn't doing your sensitive skin any favours.

As someone with hypersensitive skin, eczema and multiple autoimmune conditions – read about my health journey here – I spent years believing the solution was hidden in the next product, ingredient or skincare trend. What I've learnt over time is that sensitive skin rarely needs more. It usually just needs less to fight against.

This belief is the whole reason I started Yours Only. Every product in our range is multi-use, but not in the "3-in-1 body wash your ex kept in the shower" kind of way. They're multi-use because sensitive skin often benefits from fewer products, fewer potential irritants and a simpler routine overall.

CLEAN 8-in-1 Hair, Face + Body Cleanser is probably the best example of this. Instead of needing separate products for your hair, face and body, CLEAN was designed to do multiple jobs while remaining gentle enough for sensitive skin.

If your skin feels irritated, overwhelmed or like it's constantly reacting to something, your routine itself might be part of the problem.

Here are some signs your skincare routine may be more complicated than it needs to be.

Why more skincare isn't always better

Skincare can absolutely be beneficial. The problem isn't skincare itself. It's skincare overload.

When you're using multiple products, active ingredients and treatments at once, it can become difficult for your skin to keep up.

This is especially true if you have sensitive skin. Every new product introduces new ingredients, preservatives, fragrances, plant extracts or actives that your skin needs to tolerate. The more products you use, the more opportunities there are for irritation.

In some cases, a complicated routine can leave your skin barrier feeling stressed, resulting in redness, dryness, flaking, stinging or increased sensitivity.

5 signs your skincare routine is too complicated

1. Your skin feels irritated more often than comfortable

If redness, itching, stinging or sensitivity have become your new normal, it's worth taking a closer look at your routine.

While skin conditions can contribute to irritation, so can product overload. Your skin shouldn't feel like it's constantly fighting to keep up.

2. You're always introducing new products

Trying something new every week? Constantly rotating products? Following every skincare trend that appears on TikTok?

When you're regularly changing products, it becomes almost impossible to know what's helping and what's causing problems. Consistency often tells you more about your skin than constant experimentation.

3. You can't tell what's working

If someone asked you which product is improving your skin, would you know? Many people end up using so many products at once that they have no idea what's making a difference. A simpler routine makes it easier to identify what your skin genuinely responds well to.

4. Your skin feels tight, dry or stingy

Many people assume these symptoms mean they need more products. Sometimes the opposite is true. Over-cleansing, over-exfoliating or layering too many active ingredients can leave the skin barrier struggling to hold onto moisture. When that happens, skin can feel dry, tight and uncomfortable no matter how many products you apply.

5. You're using multiple active ingredients at the same time

Retinol. AHAs. BHAs. Vitamin C. Exfoliating acids. While these ingredients can have their place, combining too many at once can increase the risk of irritation, particularly for sensitive skin.

More actives don't always mean better results. Sometimes they simply mean more stress for your skin barrier.

What happens when you overload your skin barrier?

Your skin barrier plays an important role in helping keep moisture in and irritants out.

When it's functioning well, skin tends to feel comfortable, resilient and balanced. On the flip side, when it's overwhelmed, you may notice:

  • Redness
  • Dryness
  • Flaking
  • Burning
  • Increased sensitivity
  • Tightness
  • Itching
  • More frequent irritation

This doesn't necessarily mean you've permanently damaged your skin. It may simply be a sign that your skin needs a little less stimulation and a little more support.

How to simplify your skincare routine

When skin is feeling reactive, my advice is usually surprisingly simple. Strip things back. Start with the basics.

Step 1: Use a gentle cleanser

Choose a cleanser that effectively removes dirt, sunscreen and impurities without leaving your skin feeling stripped.

At Yours Only, CLEAN 8-in-1 Hair, Face + Body Cleanser was designed specifically for sensitive skin. It gently cleanses without fragrance or common irritants and can help simplify multiple products into one.

Step 2: Focus on barrier support

A moisturiser should help support your skin barrier, not compete with it.

I created COAT Face + Body Moisturiser after struggling to find a simple moisturiser that worked for my own hypersensitive skin. With just 8 ingredients, COAT helps nourish dry, sensitive skin while supporting a healthy skin barrier.

Step 3: Add targeted support where needed

For particularly dry, cracked or irritated areas, a targeted balm can help provide additional nourishment and protection.

Lip + Body BALM was created for lips, dry patches and skin that needs a little extra support without unnecessary ingredients.

Do sensitive skin types need fewer products?

Many people with sensitive skin will benefit from simpler routines. Fewer products can mean fewer potential irritants, fewer ingredient interactions and fewer opportunities for the skin barrier to become overwhelmed.

I spent years trying to manage my hypersensitive skin with more and more products, always influenced by what was trending on social media. It got to the point where I didn’t know which new products were creating problems and which ones were fixing them. I knew that there had to be a better way.

That's one of the reasons I created Yours Only. Because after years of managing my own sensitive skin, I realised that complexity wasn't helping. Simplicity was.

Key takeaways

  • Skin irritation, redness and sensitivity can sometimes be signs of skincare overload.
  • Using too many products can make it difficult to identify what's helping and what's hurting.
  • Sensitive skin often responds well to simpler routines with fewer potential irritants.
  • A gentle cleanser, barrier-supporting moisturiser and targeted balm may be all many people need.
  • Consistency is often more important than complexity.
