5 benefits of a zinc scalp mask for flaky scalps

Dealing with a flaky scalp? Same. That’s why I created Scalp, Hair + Body MASK

Scalps can become stressed out for so many reasons. Winter has a lot to answer for and so does the heating that we turn on to counteract the drop in temperature. Stress, over-washing and product build-up are all culprits too, and can disrupt your scalp’s natural balance.

While flakes are often blamed on “dryness”, that’s only part of the story. Many flaky scalps are actually experiencing imbalance – excess oil, irritation or microbial overgrowth. That’s where zinc comes in, which just so happens to be one of the key ingredients in our super popular Scalp, Hair + Body MASK

Used in dermatological skincare for decades, zinc has long been recognised for its calming and rebalancing properties. It’s perfect for flaky, sensitive or irritated scalps.

I created Scalp, Hair + Body MASK as a targeted, gentle way to support scalp health – without stripping or overwhelming sensitive skin.

Here are five benefits of using a zinc scalp mask – like, ahem, Scalp, Hair + Body MASK – for flaky scalp concerns.

1. Helps reduce flakes at the source

Not all flakes are created equal. In many cases, dandruff is linked to an overgrowth of naturally occurring yeast on the scalp, combined with excess oil production.

Zinc is known for its natural antimicrobial properties. This means it helps manage the microorganisms associated with dandruff, rather than simply washing visible flakes away. Instead of masking the symptom, it works to rebalance the environment that allows flakes to form.

A zinc scalp mask allows the ingredient to sit on the scalp for longer than a shampoo would, offering more sustained support. Over time, this can lead to fewer visible flakes and a more stable scalp condition.

2. Calms itchy, irritated scalps

Flaking is often accompanied by discomfort – tightness, itchiness or visible redness. This is where zinc’s anti-inflammatory properties become particularly valuable.

As a mineral commonly used in dermatological formulations, zinc helps soothe irritation and reduce inflammation. For sensitive scalps, this can make a noticeable difference in day-to-day comfort.

If your scalp feels reactive or easily aggravated, incorporating a zinc scalp treatment mask, such as MASK Scalp, Hair and Body, once or twice a week can act as a calming reset. Rather than over-exfoliating or aggressively treating the skin, zinc supports it in returning to balance.

For those seeking zinc for itchy scalp relief, this gentle approach is often more sustainable long term.

3. Regulates excess oil without over-drying

It may seem counterintuitive, but many flaky scalps are actually oily – not dry. Excess sebum can feed dandruff-causing yeast and contribute to clumping and visible flakes.

Zinc helps regulate sebum production, encouraging a healthier oil balance. Importantly, it does this without stripping the scalp of its natural moisture.

Harsh shampoos can trigger a rebound effect, where the scalp produces even more oil to compensate. We suggest opting for a gentle shampoo such as CLEAN 8-in-1 Hair, Face + Body Cleanser. A balanced mineral treatment like zinc supports regulation without disrupting the skin barrier.

By helping to normalise oil production, a zinc scalp mask for flaky scalp concerns addresses one of the underlying contributors to persistent flaking.

4. Supports a stronger scalp barrier

Your scalp has a protective barrier, just like the skin on your face. When that barrier is compromised – through over-washing, harsh treatments or environmental stress – irritation and flaking can increase.

Zinc plays a supportive role in skin repair and barrier recovery. By calming inflammation and promoting healing, it helps reinforce the scalp’s natural defences.

A stronger barrier means:

  • Less sensitivity
  • Reduced redness
  • Fewer ongoing flakes
  • Improved resilience over time

For those with reactive or delicate skin, choosing a sensitive scalp treatment mask such as MASK Scalp, Hair and Body that includes zinc can be a more considered alternative to stronger exfoliating acids.

Healthy flakes management isn’t about stripping – it’s about strengthening.

5. Gently detoxes build-up without stripping

Styling products, dry shampoo, sweat and pollution can accumulate on the scalp, contributing to congestion and visible flakes.

While exfoliating acids can be effective, they’re not always well tolerated by sensitive skin. Zinc offers a more balanced approach.

As part of MASK Scalp, Hair and Body, zinc helps lift build-up while maintaining moisture equilibrium. It supports a cleaner, fresher-feeling scalp without leaving it tight or dry.
Think of it as a mineral reset rather than an aggressive detox.

For those who struggle with irritation from traditional anti-dandruff treatments, this gentler method can help manage flakes while keeping the scalp comfortable.
