What is sugarcane bioplastic?
For BALM and COAT Mini, we use a 100% recyclable and plant-based packaging alternative to plastic – sugarcane bioplastic. But what IS sugarcane bioplastic and why do we use it?
Okay, firstly, sugarcane absorbs carbon dioxide from the air as it grows – just like trees! Carbon dioxide is one of our biggest pollutants and a real kicker for climate change, so, naturally we love what sugarcane does. It’s used by mills as a raw material and transformed into ethanol, which is then used to make cosmetic tubes. The sugarcane husks actually generate bio-electricity in the factory, making the production process even more sustainable – win, win!
What makes sugarcane bioplastic such an environmentally friendly option is, it reduces the reliance on fossil fuels (such as oil for the production of virgin plastic), by using renewable resources. Did we mention it’s also durable, protective & 100% recyclable?
Fun fact: if every Aussie household used sugarcane bioplastic bottles for their cleaning and body care products for just ONE year, the amount of carbon dioxide saved from being released into the atmosphere would be around 246,000 tonnes.
The same amount of pollution could be saved if we removed 52,761 vehicles from the road here in Aus OR if we planted 6.4 million trees.* The choice is ours, quite literally.
So, now you understand why sugarcane bioplastic was an obvious choice when it came down to our packaging options for our BALM & COAT Mini tubes. It’s not easy making these decisions, but we’re constantly educating ourselves at Yours Only on how we can do better as a business, for our bodies and our planet.
